Cinder

By Marissa Meyer

5/5 Stars

I’ll be honest, I’m really behind on reading (life’s been insane lately), so I’m writing about one of my go-to novels today.

Cinder is the first of the Lunar Chronicles and is a re-imagined twist on the classic fairy tale, Cinderella.

I LOVE this book. Cinderella was always one of my favorite Disney movies/characters, but a lot of the times a spinoff will feel tired or boring.

In my opinion, Meyer does an amazing job breathing new life into a spin on this classic story.

Cinder is a cyborg mechanic, who is treated poorly by her step-mother and one of her two step-sisters, despite being the only breadwinner in the house. Cyborgs are deemed “lesser beings” by society, as they are humans who have had some sort of modification done as a result of some sort of medical issue.

Prince Kai is the sole heir to one of the most powerful kingdoms on Earth. He hires Cinder to help repair one of his old robots, since she is one of the best mechanics in the city. While she’s repairing it, Cinder discovers there’s more to why Kai wanted to fix his robot than sentimental reasons.

A pandemic sweeps the globe, and the only leader with the cure is the evil Lunar queen (yes, queen of the moon). No one on Earth trusts her, as Lunars are known to have the power to alter their appearance, mood, and even thoughts/feelings of any humans they come in contact with.

There’s love, heartbreak, mystery, action, adventure, life, death and intrigue with each chapter. The characters are real, likeable characters.

I know, I know. It sounds a little cheesy when you write it all out. But if you’re a fan of twists on classics, and like a book with plot twists (as well as fantasy), this is a book (entire series, actually) I HIGHLY recommend. It’s one of my favorites and I re-read it every couple of years…each time I’m flipping pages like I don’t know what’s going to happen.
