By Diana Gabaldon
3.5-4/5 Stars
Boy, was this book a beast.
The Fiery Cross is the 5th book in the Outlander series, and if you haven’t read the previous 4 books, DO NOT READ THIS YET.
Gabaldon’s writing is incredible. She does an amazing job at making the story and characters come to life. However, I almost gave up on this book in the early pages (hence the odd review of 3.5 to 4 stars – the rating waivers the more I think about it).
It took me about 4 months to get through the first 250 pages. The story was incredibly monotonous and the reader was provided with every. single. detail.
Once I managed to get through those 250 pages (this is a 1400 page book), it felt like the previous 4 novels. I flew through the rest of the book, drinking in the story and following closely each of their storylines.
There were, admittedly, portions of the book that I skimmed over in my haste to continue on with the story, but more often than not, I was paying close attention to each word printed on the pages.
Roger’s character development was a main focus of this installment. I’ll admit, in the 4th book, I wasn’t Roger’s biggest fan. Now, he’s one of my favorite characters. His dynamic with Jamie has been very well developed and is one that makes me smile.
There were a lot of interesting side stories (a few of which were more predictable than others, but entertaining nonetheless) that helped keep the pace of the novel moving – after those initial 250 pages.
The ending was a surprise and I’m very much looking forward to starting the 6th book!
