Dr. Temperance Brennan finds herself in the middle of a biker gang war in the third installment of Reichs’ novels featuring the crime-solving anthropologist. Brennan is called in to identify victims of the local Montreal biker gang war and uncovers the partial remains of a young girl during the process. Working to piece together where the rest of the girl’s remains are located, Brennan begins to realize those around her have somehow been pulled into the web of the war.
BONES is one of my favorite TV shows and is the primary reason I’ve picked up Reichs’ novels. While this may be one of her older books, Deadly Décisions kept me intrigued and engaged throughout the story, and the references to the 80’s and 90’s culture were quite nostalgic (as this book was written in 1999).
Typically books circling around gang activity are not stories that intrigue me – I find there’s usually a lot of behind-the-scenes politics that result in a significant lack of action and/or a slow-moving plot. That was not the case here! While the politics between the biker gangs was brought up and analyzed, it was done so in a way that solely added to the plot and did not detract from the pace of the story.
There was a good balance between Brennan’s personal and professional life, with the two coming together towards the end in a very deadly way.
Perfect for anyone looking for an intriguing murder mystery with a dangerous twist, this novel is one that I enjoyed and read in two sittings, but is not one I’ll likely read again.
