The Duke and I

by Julia Quinn
3/5 Stars

Admittedly, I picked this up because of the Netflix show – I had no idea the show was based on the books. Typically, I’m not a huge fan of “what’s popular” when it relates to TV shows or music (for example) but Bridgerton was the exception…which led me to the books. I would also like to add I rarely go in the order of TV show (or movie) to book – generally I enjoy reading the book first then watching Hollywood’s interpretation, so this may also have an impact on my level of enjoyment of this novel.

Romance isn’t a genre I tend to drift towards, so please keep that in mind during this review.

The plot of the book isn’t as fast-paced as the show, which is to be expected. I was hoping for a bit more of the action/drama/intrigue like what was presented in the show, and a lot more of Lady Whistledown, but her input in the book itself was very minimal (which may be why Quinn wrote the Lady Whistledown series…more to come, as I do intend to read those).

There’s a heavy focus on family relationships, primarily between Anthony and Daphne, as well as the titular romance between Daphne and the Duke. The characters themselves are great. Anthony is my favorite character in the show, and he’s also my favorite in the books. Colin is also wonderfully written.

There’s humor, there’s scandal, there’s love. If you’re looking for a quick and easy read for the poolside days that are looming in the distance, this would be an excellent choice, especially if you’re a fan of the Bridgerton series on Netflix.

3/5 stars simply because I like a much faster paced, plot-twisty novel, and I likely won’t read this one again, but I definitely plan on reading the rest of the Bridgerton-related novels.
