Poison for Breakfast

by Lemony Snicket
4/5 Stars

This was the first book of Lemony Snicket’s I’ve ever read – well, listened to. There’s not much of a plot except that the narrator receives a note under his door indicating that he had poison for breakfast. The narrator then launches into a lot of philosophical musings on his quest to discover what the meaning of the note is.

Truthfully, I typically am not drawn to books that are heavy on philosophy. Surprisingly, I found myself greatly enjoying this book. There were many points made about mundane parts of life that we typically find ourselves overlooking or under-appreciating. I’m sure there were parts of the philosophy that went right over my head, but the sarcasm and humor that was employed was fantastic. There were several times I found myself chuckling or smiling at some of the narration.

The story wandered a lot. At times it was tough to follow where we were in the present plot line, since the narrator branched off into his musings or reflections so often. However, the story always came back easily to the main plot.

There were a lot of references to other books that impacted the narrator’s life, the titles of which were provided at the end.

The conclusion of the story was…interesting. There was no conclusion exactly, but made you sit back and reflect on everyday life.

Overall I found this enjoyable and would recommend it to someone looking for a witty, short read that provides the occasional laugh.
