The Princess Bride

by William Goldman

4/5 Stars

If you’ve ever seen the movie The Princess Bride, you already know the plot of this book. If you haven’t seen the movie…1) you should go do that and 2) the storyline is essentially a satiric take on traditional princess-rescued-by-prince stories.

Before picking up this book, I had no idea it was written prior to the movie (I had always – wrongly – assumed this was one of those cases where the book is written because the movie was popular). The satirical effects used throughout the novel are incredible. The storyline itself is littered with satire, and Goldman’s commentary throughout the story made me laugh out loud several times.

The plot line is very similar to that of the movie, but we get to learn more about the backgrounds of the characters than what is presented to us in the movie. One of the few books that I will say the movie did it justice.

For lovers of action, humor, satire, with some of the love story sprinkled in, this book is for you.
