Midnight Sun

by Stephanie Meyer

3.5/5 Stars

First off, I was Team Jacob back when these books first came out. After reading this book, I am still Team Jacob.

Secondly, if you pick this book up expecting anything different from Twilight, you should probably set the book back down. This is literally Twilight, except in this book we get Edward’s angst instead of Bella’s.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t regret reading this!

If you’re a fan of Twilight, you should give it a go, absolutely. But wow, is their relationship a thousand times more toxic than I originally thought, and man, is Edward a million times creepier than I originally thought.

The neat thing about Edward’s perspective was getting to know the other vampires better. Alice was my favorite vampire back in the day, and I love her even more after getting to hear more about her personality. Rosalie’s reaction towards Bella is way more understandable, and Emmett and Jasper are just great too. Carlisle is…well Carlisle. We didn’t get too much more about Esme though.

Edward got to be a lot to handle at times. His toxic need to control Bella’s surroundings is…ugh. Not to mention, his presence in her room while she’s sleeping without her knowledge is even creepier hearing about it “live”.

One thing I still cannot understand, is how these two fall in love after like literally 2 or 3 conversations. That was never fully discussed, which is irritating. Personally, I would love to hear a book about Edward’s time in Italy.

All in all, it was an easy book to follow, and aids with the escapism that some folks seek while reading. Again, if you like Twilight and want to experience how it feels to read a book you enjoyed for the first time, definitely pick this up.
