Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other

by Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish

5/5 Stars

If you’re a fan of Outlander (the TV show) and are interested in Scottish history, this book is the perfect introduction!

Following Graham and Sam around Scotland was entertaining, informative, and thoroughly enjoyable. Many times throughout the book, I found myself actually laughing out loud and other times being incredibly sobered by the dark history that they touch on during their journey.

If you’re a fan of Outlander, but are not caught up to Season 5 of the show, please be aware that there are some spoilers discussed during Sam and Graham’s banter!

If you’re not a fan of Outlander, but enjoy humor and history, this book will still be an enjoyable read, but parts of the chapters may be lost on you as they reference filming locations, other actors/scenes related to Outlander, and discuss the show. I’d say those types of discussions are approximately 10% of the book.

One thing that was great about this book is that there’s no true plot. As someone who gets caught up in a book and ends up staying up wayyyyyy too late, this was the perfect read to wind down at the end of the day. The stories they tell are interesting, and the humor is light-hearted which helps to end the day on a positive note.

I definitely recommend this book, will 100% read it again, and am excited to look deeper at some of the topics they discussed in this book!
