Dark and Shallow Lies follows the story of 17-year-old Grey as she tries to look deeper in to the disappearance of her best friend, Elora.
I reviewed this book a bit differently than I typically do on goodreads, and I am going to share it again here at the bottom of this review. But first, my thoughts on it.
For anyone who’s a fan of twists and murder mysteries, this novel will keep you captivated. I was on my toes the entire book. The plot was very entertaining and the ending suprised me a lot!
The setting of this story is in a town called LaCochette, Louisiana, known as the psychic capital of the world, which is very important to the overall storyline, so regardless of if you believe in psychic abilities or not, this is a plot point that absolutely needs to be accepted in order to enjoy this book. Each of the characters has some sort of psychic ability. For example: Grey discovers she has the ability to psuedo-predict the future; Hart (one of the main characters) is a psychic empath, which means he’s able to feel exactly what those around him feel.
The characters overall leave a bit to be desired. The two main male characters creeped me out extensively, which detracted from the love story arc present throughout. I also had a really hard time connecting with the comradarie bordering on obsession all of the Summer Children (name for all of the teens born the same summer with their special powers – there are 12 to start with) had for each other, especially towards Hart and Elora.
The unique abilities each character had was an interesting twist to a murder mystery. Sain did a wonderful job at making these abilities attributes to the characters and not their entire identity, which helped with connecting to the characters and contributed to their individual development.
Overall, I greatly enjoyed the pace of the book (fairly fast-paced) and the constant guessing game for the “whodunit”. The culprit in the end was 100% not who I expected it to be, and as an Agatha Christie fan, I loved it.
