Johnie Irish is a page turner that tells the story of wrongly-convicted-but-the-world-doesn’t-believe-him ex-con Bayer Thompson. Thompson is trying to move on with his life after being released from prison, but is continually harassed by an overzealous and stubborn cop with an overactive imagination named Detective Holcomb. Holcomb believes Thompson is tied to crime leader, Sinclair, who Holcomb and his team are trying to put away.
This novel was an entertaining quick read and kept me at the edge of my seat. There were so many twists and turns throughout the book. Nothing felt rushed, but no part of the story dragged on either. The characters were well written, so much so that just seeing Holcomb’s name started to make my blood boil – it’s been a while since I’ve wanted to see a character go down in a blazing fire. The ending was surprising and also neatly wrapped up all of the questions the reader posed throughout the duration of the story.
Short, exciting, and well written, I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good plot twist. 4/5 stars.
