Davia Glenn is a secret operative for the U.S. military and is the only woman on an all-male team, which means she’s sort of a badass. When her wealthy aunt dies and leaves her fortune to Davia, her inheritance comes with a slew of odd requirements in order for Davia to retain use of the money. While Davia takes a year off to decide between a life riddled with bullets or a life studded in diamonds, she becomes the target of several assassins, each hired by a master criminal known as The Badger.
I had such high hopes for this novel!
The premise was really fresh and new and I was so excited when I received this as part of a goodreads giveaway. Unfortunately, the plot moved at almost lightning speed in a lot of areas where I would’ve liked to see the characters/storyline more thought out.
Parts of the story didn’t feel very well researched. For example, as part of her aunt’s will, Davia is required to move to one of the wealthiest zip codes in the country. The author spends some time describing different clothing and cars and frivolous details about her environment, but never really describes Davia’s house. There’s no concept of how large it is, other than “beyond comprehension” which doesn’t really help the reader get inside the story.
There are 2 mysteries that present themselves during the course of the plot – a theft (or several) and a murder. These two points added to the intrigue of the plot and I was eager to learn how everything fit together, but when the mysteries are solved in the last 10 pages, it all feels rather anticlimactic.
Despite the above, the book was humorous and entertaining. Davia’s character annoyed me during her adjustment to the wealth, as she was extremely judgmental of everything and everyone, but as she developed friendships and acquaintances, she began to grow and recognize her own faults, which made her more likeable.
Overall, it was an enjoyable read. The sarcasm, funny thoughts, and relatable humor used made me actually laugh out loud at times. Not to mention, the plot is one I’ve never read before, which makes it refreshing in the world of action/thriller novels.
This was a quick read, and I noticed it says “Davia Glenn #1” on the ebook…I’d be interested in reading a #2, given the plot feels slightly less rushed and the story and characters are more developed.
