by Marissa Meyer
3.5 – 4/5 Stars
Meyer never fails to entertain.
This unique spin on the story of Rumpelstiltskin was entertaining, plot-twisty, and a fair bit darker than her other novels.
Gilded has by far a more “fairy tale” vibe than the Lunar Chronicles did, in my opinion. There’s a lot of magic and the novel is written in a way that feels like the true fairy tales (i.e. darker than how Disney portrays the stories).
While easy for me to want to read, at times it felt like the plot dragged a bit. The dialogue felt somewhat stilted in places, and there were some scenes that felt disjointed.
However, that didn’t keep me from picking it up in every spare moment I had until I finished it. Meyer clearly is intending to release a sequel to this, which explains (and excuses in my book) the randomness of some of the plot, as I’m sure she’ll tie it all together.
I will say, if this is your first Meyer book, this isn’t her best work, even though it is still pretty good and entertaining. On a Meyer scale, this gets a 3.5, but on a regular scale, it gets a 4 (hence the in-between rating).
