Ready Player Two

by Ernest Cline

3.5/5 Stars

If you follow me on goodreads, you’ll notice that I gave this a 4/5 on there. After having about a week to ruminate on the ending of the book, I’ve dropped my rating down half a star.

While not quite as exciting/engaging as Ready Player One, I still really enjoyed this book. Wil Wheaton does an incredible job narrating the audiobook, which lended to the enjoyable nature of this book.

Ready Player Two follows the same characters as in Ready Player One, who are faced with the challenge of running the company they inherited colelctively while dealing with a potentially-murderous NPC.

The twists are somewhat predictable but still enjoyable. Some of the details about the locations get a bit nitty-gritty, which can be confusing if you aren’t familiar with a movie/game Cline is referencing.

At first, I was happy with the way everything wrapped up, yet the longer I’ve had to think about it, the more I would’ve liked to see the ending take a different direction.

Everything felt too perfect – too lovey-dovey in a world that is supposedly in so much chaos. Samantha (who I relate to very much in these two books) disappointed me a lot in the end. Wade (who I liked but was kind of ‘meh’ about) ended up becoming more likeable.

Despite the drawbacks of some seemingly-forced character development and an ending that was too kind in such a chaotic world, this book kept me thinking about it almost a full week after I finished it, which is why it only gets docked a half star.

Any book that nags at me like that is a story well told and enjoyed.
